The Windows Vista Pen Experience

Microsoft Journal is an application included in Vista that is exclusively for the benefit of users working with a pen tablet, pen display, or Tablet PC. Journal simulates a physical notebook, but with all the advantages of digital note taking. You can use a Wacom pen in Journal to jot notes and capture quick sketches providing valuable collaboration options for use at home, school, and work. Journal also incorporates a powerful search engine that can even locate handwritten content.

Vista introduces intelligent handwriting recognition as a natural supplement to keyboard input. This new recognition technology efficiently and accurately converts a wide variety of handwriting styles into typed text. Handwriting can be used to quickly enter information anywhere that the computer accepts typed input.

There are a variety of pen gestures available within Vista that allow you to navigate faster and that greatly enhance the overall computing experience. Flicks offers eight customizable gestures with actions that you determine and Scratch Out lets you delete text by simply scratching your pen over the targeted text.

Microsoft Office 2007 and a Wacom pen offer new capabilities that allow you to work more naturally and efficiently. Within Vista, Office 2007 applications such as Wordｮ, Excelｮ, Outlookｮ, PowerPointｮ, and OneNoteｮ all support digital mark-up with a Wacom pen and provide easy access to digital inking tools for intuitive collaboration.

Microsoft Journal provides an intuitive set of tools that allow pen users to very naturally enter and accumulate information that can then be quickly located using the powerful search function. Tools included in Journal include a choice of pens, markers, and highlighters plus an eraser (easily activated by the eraser end of a Wacom pen), a selection lasso, and a flag tool. Please take a look at the following examples to get a better sense of just some of the ways in which Journal can be used.

Vista takes advantage of the pen's inherent three-dimensional dexterity to allow users to control up to eight actions with simple pen gestures. These actions can be navigational like scroll up, scroll down, back, and forward or procedures like cut, paste, copy, delete, or undo. This is a concept that is challenging to describe but fairly easy to master and powerfully intuitive once mastered. The following images should help to demonstrate the concept.
